| Paleomagnetism
is the study of the magnetic properties of rocks. Paleomagnetists are
therefore united more by a collection of instruments than by any coherent
research objective. The broad and interdisciplinary nature of paleomagnetism
is one of its great strengths. Over the last century, paleomagnetic research
has focussed on four main branches: fundamental tool development, geomagnetic
applications, geological applications and environmental applications.
The main function of the Scripps Paleomagnetic Laboratory is to
analyze the magnetic properties of rocks. This is done with the purpose
of deciphering the ancient geomagnetic field, and to aid in geological
